The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: The Headless Horseman, said to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during "some nameless battle" of the American Revolutionary War, "rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head". Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut believes these ghost stories. He loves Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer, Baltus Van Tassel, but has many rivals too. One night, the ambitious Crane attends a harvest party at the Van Tassels' homestead. He listens to ghostly legends told by Brom( one of the rivals) and the locals, and frightened. Ichabod rides home alone and encounters a cloaked rider at an intersection in a menacing swamp. The rider hurls his severed head into Ichabod's terrified face and put him to a coma. The next morning, people find Ichabod’s hat and a smashed pumpkin, thinking he must be dead. Several years later, an old peasant says he saw Ichabod in New York; he is still alive and is a judge now. Katrina married Brom Bones after the missing of Ichabod. Brom laughs every time when people talk about the pumpkin thing and is cast out of the village on suspicion of the Ichabod thing. Finally, the village is back to normal.
