Classical Chinese poems emphasise the expression of poets’ emotions and the depiction of scenery, and focus more on friendship, family tie, love, homesickness and some other complicated and subtle human feelings, which has become a great tradition of Chinese poetry. Under the influence of Confucianism, Chinese poems feature “stemming from emotions but ending in rites, so while expressing their emotions, poets are unrestrained, to some extent, on the one hand but reserved on the other, making Chinese poems different from western ones. At the same time, Chinese poets prefer implying while writing, excelling at using various artistic skills to express what they really mean and leaving the readers an aftertaste and a freedom to imagine. The masterpieces of ancient Chinese poems often are full of restrained affection, vivid and rhythmical. Therefore, reciting these poems can make one under the influence of art and beauty. In addition, classical poems also manifest the beauty of nature and the integration of human and nature. “Poems can bring forth pictures and vice versa,” says our ancestors. Each poem in this series is accompanied with a traditional Chinese painting created by a modern artist and based on the poem’s conception. Appreciating these poems and paintings together, readers can better comprehend the feelings and meanings expressed in traditional Chinese poems and have a better taste of the works’ beauty. In addition to “emotions and feelings”, the series consists of separate books focusing on different poets and presenting the characteristics and art style of each poet, and each book is composed of two parts: a short introduction to the poet and an appreciation and analysis of his poems. Besides, the appreciation and analysis can be further divided into three sections: explanation of the theme and the title, explanation of sentences, and comment. The first section offers the context in which a poet wrote, the second one is to translate each sentence with modern Chinese and annotate difficult characters, and the last one provides the main idea of each poem incisively and concisely and comments on the poem’s characteristics. Publishing this book series, we aim to remove obstacles—difficult characters and words—to reading and facilitate readers’ comprehension of main ideas, artistic features and writing skills. Classic ancient Chinese poems have been beautified and purified to an extreme extent and can make every Chinese proud. These works are cultural ties that link the thoughts and feelings of every Chinese, no matter where they are, at home or abroad, since all excellent poems can have the same emotional appeal to all readers. Anyone who loves the traditional culture of his homeland may continuously read and learn these poems, legacies passed down from his ancestors. Then, over time, part of this excellent culture will be deposited in people’s mind, forming a beautiful art gallery and offering them enlightenment, encouragement and enjoyment of art. The famous works presented in this series, we hope, can be part of the art gallery. Poets introduced of course have many well known works but only about two to three dozen masterpieces are selected due to the series’ limitation.
